7 Chores You Forget To Do… But Really Should Do Regularly

Charlotte Mechanical, one of Charlotte's most trusted HVAC companies, gives you a to-do list of household chores that you may forget about but should do at least once a year to keep a healthy home.

We all have our chores that we do every week… vacuum the house, dust the shelves, do the laundry. But you may be forgetting to do some critical housework that could cause serious problems later on if you ignore it.

Thankfully, this chore list only has to be done once or twice a year, but it’s important to put these tasks on your to-do list.

Task #1: Drain Sediment from Hot Water Heater

We all like a nice hot shower, right? If you want to avoid an icy cold shower, you need to make sure you’re checking your hot water heater and draining out any minerals or debris. The sediment can decrease your water heaters’ efficiency as it builds up.

This one will be easy to check off the chore list because all you have to do is book an appointment with Charlotte Mechanical. Our expert technicians will come out day, night, holiday or weekend and will drain your hot water heater while also making sure it’s in proper working order.

Task #2: Clean Dryer Vent

It’s common knowledge to always clean out the lint trap of your dryer. But did you know you should do the same thing for the dryer vent?

Lint and dirt can still get caught in the dryer vent and build up which could cause your dryer to overheat, burn clothes or even start a fire.

Charlotte Mechanical, one of Charlotte's most trusted HVAC companies, gives you a to-do list of household chores that you may forget about but should do at least once a year to keep a healthy home.

To prevent this from happening, use a vacuum attachment to get the lint and dust out of the vent and then use a large brush to clear the rest out. You can purchase dryer vent cleaning kits at home improvement stores like Lowe’s or the Home Depot.

Task #3: Air Conditioning Upkeep

It’s easy to forget about your air conditioning unit when the cooler temperatures arrive and you turn off the A/C. But you will want to keep an eye on your unit to avoid having it fail when the heat and humidity return.

Charlotte Mechanical, one of Charlotte's most trusted HVAC companies, gives you a to-do list of household chores that you may forget about but should do at least once a year to keep a healthy home.

If filters on the unit are clogged with dirt, that could cause your air conditioning unit to fail. You also want to make sure weeds and grass aren’t growing into the unit.

You can rely on Charlotte Mechanical to inspect and maintain your HVAC unit. Our nationally certified technicians will service your air conditioning unit on a number of levels including changing the filters, checking safety and operational controls and inspecting the indoor and outdoor coils. We will make sure your unit is ready to battle the Charlotte heat and keep you cool.

Task #5: Test Smoke Detectors

Many people believe that if your smoke detector has batteries and beeps then everything is fine and working. Nope… wrong. This only proves that your smoke detector can make a noise.

You should test it by lighting a match, blowing it out and letting the smoke hover around the detector to see if it that sets it off. This will show if your smoke detector is working.

Task #6: Clean Refrigerator Coils

We know it’s easy to clean out your fridge full of yummy food, but there are other parts of your refrigerator that need cleaning.

Charlotte Mechanical, one of Charlotte's most trusted HVAC companies, gives you a to-do list of household chores that you may forget about but should do at least once a year to keep a healthy home.

It’s important to clean the refrigerator coils once a year because they can become coated with pet hair, dirt and cooking grease. When the coils are dirty, they have to put out more energy in order to keep your fridge cool. Bottom line: You’ll have higher bills because of dirty coils.

Cleaning the coils is a pretty simple process:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator
  2. Depending on where the coils are located, either the bottom or the back, you may need to move the fridge away from the wall.
  3. Once you reach the coils, use a vacuum and a bucket of warm, soapy water to clean the coils.

Task #7: Sharpen Garbage Disposal Blades

This is another easy chore to check off your list. You want to keep the blades sharp so that they can properly cut up and dispose of your dinner scraps.

All you have to do is take some ice, toss it down the garbage disposal, run some cold water and then turn on the garbage disposal. The ice helps to remove any debris from the blades and sharpen them.

You can also freshen up your sink by throwing some lemon peel in the garbage disposal and turning it on.

And before cooler weather arrives, you will want to clean your chimney before you cozy up to the fireplace. You want to keep it clean to avoid any build-up that could cause a chimney fire that could spread to your roof. The easy thing to do is to get a professional chimney cleaner… think of Mary Poppins, but without all the dancing on your roof!

“Jeff Crane and his crew with Charlotte Mechanical recently replaced our old heat pump with a new Amana system.  Everyone on this project was extremely professional and the quality of their installation was most excellent.  Even the county inspector made a comment on the “very nice job” that Jeff and his crew had performed.  I highly recommend Charlotte Mechanical.”
