When you think about your home, air quality may not be the first thing you think of. However, your home’s air quality is so important especially if you suffer from allergies or have a pet.
Let’s talk about air quality and your home’s silent hero: The MERV. First off, MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value and is used to determine how effective your air filter is. MERV ratings range from 1-20, 1 being minimum effectiveness and 20 being the most effective. For residential usage, 12 is the highest you’ll ever need to go. MERV ratings of 13 and higher, tend to be found in hospital or manufacturing settings. You can find the MERV rating printed on the air filter.
The best filters for your home are the ones with MERV ratings of 9-12. These filters trap 90% of particles between 3 and 10 microns and up to 70% of particles between 1 and 3 microns. Microns are the term used to describe the ridiculously small particles in the air. Air filters with MERV ratings of 9-12 are perfect for people who suffer from allergies, asthma and COPD. Do you have pets? Then you’ll need a MERV rating of at least 11 to trap pet dander.
Take a look at this MERV rating chart which will help you determine which rating best suits your home. http://www.mechreps.com/PDF/Merv_Rating_Chart.pdf
