Keeping your home cool during a Charlotte summer isn't just about having a good air conditioner— it's also about supporting your HVAC system so it can work as efficiently as possible. While your system does the hard work of keeping your home cool, you can increase its efficiency with several simple (and completely free!) helpful habits.

Here are our pros’ top four pieces of advice to stay cooler, reduce energy costs, and put less strain on your A/C this summer.

1. Keep the sun (and heat) outside

One of the easiest ways to cool your home is by preventing heat from entering in the first place. Every bit of heat you keep outside is one less thing your air conditioner has to remove, helping your home stay more comfortable while reducing the strain on your HVAC system.

During the hottest part of the day, typically between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., close blinds, curtains, or shades on windows that receive direct sunlight. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, up to 76% of the sunlight that enters through windows turns into heat inside your home. Rooms with large, west-facing windows are especially prone to heating up during the afternoon.

By simply blocking that sunlight, you can noticeably reduce indoor temperatures and lessen the workload on your A/C.

2. Give your A/C room to breathe

It may seem harmless to place a couch, rug, or piece of furniture over or in front of an air vent, but doing so can make your HVAC system work much harder than necessary. Blocked supply vents prevent cool air from circulating throughout your home, while blocked return vents restrict the airflow your system needs to operate efficiently.

Take a walk through your home and make sure every vent is fully open and free from obstructions. Curtains, pet beds, storage bins, and furniture are some of the most common culprits. Even closing vents in unused rooms— a common money-saving myth— can instead your system's efficiency.

Keeping vents clear allows cool air to circulate evenly, helps maintain consistent temperatures throughout your home, and reduces unnecessary strain on your air conditioner, all without costing you a penny.

3. Make room for your outside unit, too!

Your outdoor A/C unit, called a condenser, needs plenty of room to work efficiently as well. In the summer, its job is to release the heat removed from inside your home and it can't do that if it's blocked.

Overtime, grass clippings, weeds, shrubs, leaves, and even outdoor furniture can block the unit’s airflow and force your system to work harder than necessary. That means higher energy bills, increased wear and tear on your equipment, and an A/C system that struggles to keep your home comfortable during the hottest days of summer.

Take a few minutes to inspect the area around your condenser and clear away any vegetation or debris. Experts recommend maintaining at least 2 feet of open space around the unit to ensure proper airflow.

4. Stop creating extra heat indoors

Many homeowners unknowingly make their air conditioner work harder by generating unnecessary heat inside the home.

Appliances like ovens, stovetops, clothes dryers, and even dishwashers can raise indoor temperatures significantly during the hottest parts of the day. To keep your home cool, grill outside or prepare no-cook meals when you can, and save using the oven and washing machine for the early morning or evening when outdoor temperatures are at their lowest.

If you're spending time outside, keep exterior doors closed as much as possible to prevent hot, humid air from entering your home and making your A/C work even harder to get that hot air back out. One you’re inside, make sure your fans are turning counter-clockwise to pushing cool air downward.

And the next time you need to replace your light bulbs, switch to LEDs if you haven’t already. These produce far less heat than traditional incandescent light bulbs while also using less electricity.

These small changes won't replace your air conditioner, but they will reduce the amount of heat your HVAC system has to remove. Less indoor heat means improved comfort, lower energy bills, and less wear and tear on your equipment throughout the long Charlotte summer.
